Why do we call them Fine Arts?
“Why do we call them Fine Arts?” In French and Spanish, they are Beautiful Arts - Les Beaux Arts, las Bellas artes. According to the New York Times, they are the “Living Arts”. The “fine” in Fine Arts comes from the Latin ‘finis’, meaning the end, the utmost limit, or the highest point and, by metaphoric extensions, consummate, accomplished, complete.
